Ultimate guide to T2

After nearly a month of votes almost constantly pouring in, we finally closed the booths last Friday and sat down over the weekend to do some serious counting. We had nominated only releases that we thought were truly worthwhile, but we were very pleased to see that our readers are clearly on the same wavelength when it comes to quality DVD releases. Our readers clearly share our opinions on what makes a good DVD, and we're looking forward to a year that will hopefully even surpass the high standards set by the following collection. Thanks to everyone for voting and we will continue doing our best to bring you all the latest on quality DVD releases in the year 2001!

Best DVD release: Fight Club
We had nominated ten DVDs from the past year we each deemed worthy of a Best Release title, but four of them ended up receiving most of your votes: Fight Club, Gladiator, Terminator 2 - UE and Toy Story - The Ultimate Toy Box. Ridley Scott's Roman epic was finally the closest runner-up, but the stunning 2-disc set of David Fincher's highly controversial black comedy ended up with the most votes.

Best movie: Braveheart
Beating out the editor's personal favorite North by Northwest by a very narrow margin, Mel Gibson's historical epic proved to be one of the year's most popular releases and an enduring favorite among DVD fans.

Best image quality: Toy Story 2
With its amazing digital-to-digital transfer, this was truly the one to beat for Best Image Quality, and though it got some decent competition from Gladiator, readers voted for this original-surpassing sequel with a clear majority.

Best sound: Saving Private Ryan
Again closely trailed by Gladiator, readers proved to be keenly aware of the fact that Spielberg's impressive WWII tale owed much of its success to its incredible sound design, perfectly rendered and available on DVD in both DD and DTS 5.1 versions.

Best menu screens: Terminator 2 - Ultimate Edition
The easiest winner of the lot was of course this ultimate edition of the popular sci-fi epic, that features some of the most detailed, exquisitely rendered 3-D menu environments yet seen on DVD. With three times as many votes as the number 2 in this category (Gladiator), these menus walked away with the award.

Best extras: Terminator 2 - Ultimate Edition
This category had some pretty stiff competition, with all nominated titles getting plenty of votes, and a final neck-and-neck race with Fight Club. But this ultimate 2-disc edition managed to beat out all others by a slim margin.
