'I
thought you were dead...'
'Yeah, I get that a lot.'
Ripley
is cloned back to life so military scientists can breed aliens for their
biological warfare department. When the aliens escape, Ripley teams
up with a group of space pirates to battle the aliens.
After
the commercial and critical failure of Alien3, the series' producers
apparently felt unsatisfied with the trilogy as it then stood, and either
felt that there were thematic and/or character elements that had yet
to be explored, or that there was still some more cash to be made from
a formerly successful franchise (depending on your point of view and
your level of cynicism). Ultimately, the fourth instalment suffers from
several of the same script problems as its direct predecessor. Where
Alien3 piled on the gloom, Resurrection piles on the corn,
causing a rather odd balance of silly jokes and gory action setpieces.
More than a few issues remain either under-explained or completely obscure,
and the efforts to breathe new life into the franchise can therefore
be considered only half-successful at best.
What
makes the film worth watching in the end is cinematographer Darius Khondji
unsurpassed eye for colors and textures, and some well-orchestrated
action sequences, including an underwater chase through a flooded kitchen.

Region 1 and Region 2 versions have different
packaging but are otherwise identical.
The
movie is framed at 2.35:1 and is anamorphic. Being the most recent part
of the series, the picture is just about flawless, filled with rich
colors and vibrant textures. The DVD transfer is one of the best-looking
I have ever seen. The 5.1 sound mix also leaves little to be desired.
Extras
on this disc are limited to an extremely short promotional 'behind-the-scenes'
featurette. The featurette is particularly disappointing as there is
a rather funny 'Making of Alien Resurrection' video hosted by Ron Perlman
in exsitence that was included as a bonus tape with an earlier European
VHS release. The trailers to all four Alien movies are also included.
The
menus are strictly the basics: nicely designed but nothing too fancy going
on.
