Plot summary
A documentary charting Clint Eastwood's career from his early days as a bit part player for Universal studios through his superstardom and ultimate recognition as actor and director.

Film review
Long dismissed or even despised by critics, it took Clint Eastwood decades of hard work before he began receiving any of the recognition he deserves as an actor and director. Having started off as a bit player in Universal Studio's B-movie roster, he first attracted the public's eye as Rowdy Yates in the long-running Western TV series Rawhide, and rose to stardom in Sergio Leone's initial spagehetti Western trilogy. As one of Hollywood's top stars in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Eastwood always used his clout as a commercial draw to gain control of his image and career, and quickly developed into a director in his own right.

Clint Eastwood: Out of the Shadows does an excellent job tracing Eastwood's fascinating path in filmmaking, taking the time to elaborate on his most interesting work while neither skipping nor lingering over the many movies he made or appeared in simply to maintain an active profile within the mass market movie industry. The many speakers who appear here paying tribute are well chosen, with Martin Scorsese eloquently observant as usual, and critics both supportive and otherwise (Pauline Kael) allowed the opportunity to vent their opinions. Best of all, there is ample material from the man himself, who comes across as a centered, likeable man with a clear eye, a sharp mind and an incredibly life story.

Picture and sound
The anamorphic widescreen image is framed at an aspect ratio of approx. 1.78:1. The video transfer is nicely crisp and clean, though most many of the movie clips don't look as good as they might have.
The soundtrack is in two-track Dolby Surround, mostly anchored in the center channel with some spreading of the accompanying jazz score across the front soundstage.

Added value
There are no extras on this release, the documentary is the only feature on the disc.Access to the limited features on this disc is through nicely designed static menu screens.
