Dr.
Evil:
You're not quite evil enough. You're semi-evil. You're quasi-evil. You're
the margarine of evil. You're the Diet Coke of evil, just one calorie,
not evil enough.
Austin
Powers must travel back in time to the 1960s to recover his stolen mojo.
I've
said it before and I'll say it again: I'm not a big Austin Powers fan.
I've always liked Mike Myers, but his Austin Powers character has about
enough variety to sustain a 15-minute short IMHO. Of course I am in
a vast minority with this, so I'll try and mention a few things I did
like about this second AP flick.
Its pacing is a whole lot better than the first film, which seemed to
drag itself from situation to situation without ever getting very far
or even sustaining the comedy of a single scene. This episode in what
I fear will become a vastly successful franchise has a little more plot
and a lot more Dr. Evil. That's the good news. The bad news is that
Myers also plays an obese Scot known as Fat Bastard, and with this character
explored completely new avenues of unfunniness. We know he can do a
Scottish accent hilariously from SNL and his earlier film So I Married
an Axe Murderer. But somehow the combination of being disgustingly
obese, rude and extremely loud with a Scottish accent is not just unamusing,
it's really annoying... |

Region 1 and Region 2 releases are identical.
The
DVD release of AP:TSWSM is astonishingly well-done. The image is framed
in an anamorphic aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and is crisp and clear with
bright colors, no signs of over-saturation or artifacts.
The Dolby 5.1 mix is likewise nicely done, with a deep soundstage and
excellent definition.
Of
the many extras on this disc, the deleted scenes section is the most
entertaining. There is over 20 minutes of deleted material, for once
presented anamorphically and nicely edited together. You can choose
to watch them individually or as one long montage. Many of the deleted
scenes are very amusing. Other extras include 3 music videos, theatrical
trailers, some easter eggs, and an audio commentary that is surprisingly
dull. The
animated menus are quite amusing, featuring not only images and sounds
from the film but with Austin Powers and Dr. Evil giving silly instructions
on what to do with the menus.
