'Dirty' Harry Callahan: You forgot to read your fortune cookie. It says, "You're shit out of luck."

Plot summary
Dirty Harry Callahan must stop a secret contest to murder local celebrities, which includes himself as a target.

Film review
'Dirty Harry meets Agatha Christie' might have been the compellin tagline for this fifth and final instalment in the cop movie franchise. Set within a world of celebrities and filmmakers as familiar as it is unconvincing, The Dead Pool has a plot that follows the basic 'whodunnit' rules of any English salon thriller novel or play, but without much of that genre's style. The story is spiced up with some gratuitously gruesome scenes of violence, with Eastwood sounding particularly bored with the one-liners he is expected to deliver. The best scenes are the quieter ones, where we see Eastwood begin to shed his rough Dirty Harry persona, bringing him closer towards the aging, sensitive old action heroes he would begin playing from Unforgiven onwards.
Version control
Identical releases are available for Region 1 and Region 2, both separately and as part of 'The Dirty Harry Series', a box set with all five movies.

Picture and sound
The anamorphic widescreen image is framed at an aspect ratio of approx. 1.85:1. The video transfer is solid, drawn from a near-flawless source print which is somewhat lacking in shadow detail, but otherwise very good.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio mix had good separation, with directional effects in the required action sequence, and a nicely balanced soundstage throughout the film.

Added value
The theatrical trailer is the only extra of any substance on this release. It is presented in anamorphic widescreen. The static menu pages are simply and pleasantly designed, and are accompanied by music cues from the score.
