[About
Kate Moore]
'Dirty' Harry Callahan: She wants to play lumberjack, she's going
to have to learn to handle her end of the log.
Dirty
Harry must foil a terrorist plot, but this time with a female partner
that he's not too excited to be working with.
The
second sequel to any movie has to be the one to either cement the franchise,
and The Enforcer does an above-average job. Following the angry
outrage of the first film, and the cautious side-stepping of its first
sequel, this third instalment treads more comfortable ground by focusing
on the Harry Callahan character and delivering an old-fashioned action
thriller. The plot is centered around the usual kind of threat to the
city, which is - of course - rife with corruption and gross incompetence.
So it's up to Dirty Harry and his newly appointed female partner to
save the day. The predictable frission between the two lead characters
is played out naturally and with a good sense of humor by Eastwood and
Tyne Daly (well-known for her leading role in TV's Cagney & Lacey
series). The action is also well-orchestrated and nicely built up towards
the finale, with few moments wasted. Overall a solid effort, and one
of the least problematic in the Dirty Harry franchise. |

Identical
releases are available for Region 1 and Region 2, both separately and
as part of 'The Dirty Harry Series', a box set with all five movies.
The
anamorphic widescreen image is framed at an aspect ratio of approx.
2.35:1. The picture presented here is immaculate, especially for a film
its age, and without a trace of damage, grain or other distractions.
Black levels are rock solid and although shadow detail isn't always
up to scratch, this is an impressive transfer by any standard.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio mix is powerful and richly detailed, with
an abundance of directional effects and a wide dynamic range. Some distortion
remains evident in the dialogues, but overall, this soundtrack can stand
to be compared to many contemporary action mixes.
The
eight-minute featurette 'Clint Eastwood/Dirty Harry: Something
Special in Films' provides the standard bit of promotional fluff, including
some behind-the-scenes footage, but little else of interest. The theatrical
trailer, presented in anamorphic widescreen, is also on board. The
static menu pages are simply and pleasantly designed, and are accompanied
by music cues from the score.
